This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
In speech therapy, we target many different skills- from sound production to basic language concepts and vocabulary. But enough with the picture cards-our students learn by doing! A is for Apple...let's hold it, describe it, sort it, pretend to eat it- the learning opportunities are limitless!
We work with students of all ages at the elementary school level- from preschool through fifth grade.
The students we serve in speech therapy present with a variety of disabilities, including: autism, developmental delays and learning disabilities; but all of our students demonstrate speech-language impairments. Their weaknesses affect their ability to effectively communicate with teachers and peers due to speech sound errors, difficulty answering questions, limited vocabulary skills, language processing weaknesses, etc. Our goal is to help all of our students reach their maximum potential and to help them be effective communicators in the classroom and in life.
There are multiple ways in which the Alphabet Tubs will be used in our therapy room- from sorting by category to practicing articulation sounds. From following directions with basic concepts in a scavenger hunt to describing by shape, size, and function. Our students will have the opportunity to interact with these objects and engage in hands-on learning which will make the lesson more meaningful and engaging.
This will give our students the opportunity to interact with items they might otherwise have never been exposed to.
With the use of manipulatives, they will expand their vocabulary, concept knowledge, sound production, and build links between language and literacy all during play-based activities.
