This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a kindergarten teacher in a general education class of 24 students. I want to provide my students with a wonderful learning environment full of hands-on experiences that encourage them to use their creative minds while learning the curriculum and core concepts.
My school is located in a high poverty neighborhood and a lack of funding requires that teachers spend their own money to provide many of the resources for their students.
My students are enthusiastic learners who deserve the best education and materials to support their learning.
My Project
I am asking for a variety of alphabet and sight word games and materials to help make learning to read fun! It is our grade level goal to teach all our students to read 80-100 sight words before they leave kindergarten. Teaching high frequency words/sight words can be challenging if students are not being read to at home. Since these words are typically non-decodable, the primary way to learn these words is be repetition and exposure. Young children are often not motivated to sit and drill flash cards so I am always trying to think of other games and hands-on ways to introduce sight words. The Sight-Word Soup games will be a great tool for my students who are simply learning to recognize the words, but perhaps not yet read them. This matching word game will help my students remain engaged with increased independence. The sight word puzzles are a great way to incorporate problem solving along with spelling.
Teaching reading can be very challenging, but it is also an amazing gift to be part of the journey over the course of the first year as they learn to read with independence and success.
My goal is for each of my students to be as prepared as possible for the first grade curriculum and to love the act of learning to read. Thank you for your support and generosity.
