This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am an educator in a charter school composed of a 60/40 ratio of Latinos and African Americans. Most of the kindergartners are from low socioeconomic families. Many of them are new to the American culture, limited in the English language, and away from their parents for the first time, in a strange environment.
They will enter Kindergarten with language barriers and limited exposure.
However. they will become scholars exposed to experiences that will help them meet my academic and social expectations.
My Project
A portable easel will help students display what they learn. They can write on it , give felt representations of letters and objects they represent. Alphabet pocket charts help students have an actual visualization of printed letters and their correct formation. Alphabet games will give opportunity for play, practice and peer tutoring.
These materials will be very helpful for the Hispanic students in my class.
They are in a new environment, and being able to see and use material is very helpful. Having the chance to hold letters, make the sounds, then make and say words will make the alphabet LIVE for them.
