This upcoming school year, I have been selected to teach kindergarten at 75th St. Elementary School. I am very much excited to teach this grade level as I have mainly have had experience in working with the upper grades (fifth grade and high school). I am especially most excited to teach this grade level because of my first year experience this current school year. Currently, I am finishing up my year teaching first grade. Through this grade level, I have been given the rare opportunity to witness the learning development amongst children and compare it with the maturity and learning development of students in the upper grades. In kindergarten, I will be given an even earlier glance of what this learning development will look like. In addition, with my experience in teaching first grade and working with upper grades, I have a big picture perspective of where these kindergarten students will be heading.
With this said, I am asking for a donation to purchase an "Alphabet Carpet" for my classroom where I will be teaching at least 20 kindergarten students. I have already asked my school if this would be possible; however, due to budget cuts this upcoming school year, new teachers will not be able to receive some of the kindergarten funds to help them furnish their classroom. The funds that are available to us will be used to purchase more pertinent items such as Teacher's Editions and supplies, such as crayons, paper, etc.
Though I appreciate what supplies will be provided for my classroom, I feel that an "Alphabet Carpet" will help my children most effectively. First of all, because many of these children will be entering the school setting for their first time, I feel a need to create a warm, comfortable environment for them. Additionally, the kindergarten curriculum will focus much on letter recognition and learning the sounds that correspond with these symbols. An "Alphabet Carpet" will help provide such support as the carpet will have the letters of the alphabet stitched into the pattern. Another reason is the fact that these children will be at an age level of which they would need to learn their limits and their boundaries. This "Alphabet Carpet" was designed in square patterns with a letter within each square. Each of my children will be able to have their own square, of which would essentially teach them their own limits. Also, in terms of classroom management, these letters and squares would allow me to guide students to the carpet quickly and without much delay. I could simply just assign each student a letter or square of which they could find easily.
DonorsChoose makes it easy for anyone to help a classroom in need. Public school teachers from every corner of America create classroom project requests, and you can give any amount to the project that inspires you.
