My Students

Story time is most of the children’s favorite time of day. They look forward to listening to their teacher read to them. This is a great time for all students. No matter what level a child is reading at all children can enjoy being read too. Story time usually takes place on the rug. The problem some of my students are facing is that the rug is too small. Some children are squished up next to each other while others are on mats and feel excluded from the classroom family. This challenge is taking away from the children’s enjoyment of listening to the story I am reading them.

My students are all extremely diverse.

Some students begin Kindergarten not knowing a word of English. Others come in having gone to Pre-K and know exactly what to expect from school. Most children come in eager to learn and are extremely excited for Kindergarten. Since I teach an inclusion class some of the children come in with IEP’s (Individualized Education Plans). This gives specific goals the children have to meet that is on their level. The children with IEP’s tend to need more individualized attention. The school is located in New York City and has a diverse population.

My Project

Having a large alphabet carpet is going to help my students in many ways. First it is going to help them learn the alphabet. We will be able to play games using the carpet that will appeal to all different learning styles. Having a large carpet will help the children focus during story time. This is the time when the most important skills and strategies are being taught. Since the children will have plenty of room to sit and be comfortable they will be more focused on the lessons being taught.

Some children who come to school unfortunately may come from a disorganized home where they are not comfortable.

One goal as an educator is to create a classroom environment that is welcoming to the children. Having a big, beautiful alphabet carpet will help the children learn the alphabet, concentrate during lessons and make the classroom look neat and organized for the children. Having the room neat and organized will help them feel comfortable and make the classroom feel like their second home.
