I teach 8th grade in an alternative school for at-risk youth who are academicaly behind by 2 or more years. Most of our students are from disadvantaged homes and have emotional and behaviorial issues. Our middle and high school program is located in an old elementary school and our resources are extremely limited. We do not have a school library and so it is difficult to provide a rich variety of reading for pleasure books for my students. I have my students for 2 periods a day (a block) and I give them time every day for silent reading. This is the only time most of them ever engage in pleasure reading and it is my desire to impart in them a love of reading. Many of them are reluctant readers but given the right books, they will become absorbed in the story. I would like to provide them with a "buffet" of "delicious" choices to enhance their silent reading time with 2 sampler sets of books designed for teens.
