Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year, my seventh grade classes include several special needs students and several English language learners. These youngsters require modified instruction that will help them meet the standards in an engaging manner.
Many of my students are living in a low-income neighborhood that has had a history of crime and violence.
Some of them know little about the world outside of their own little neighborhood.
Yet these students are intelligent. They have proven over the past three years to be as capable, if not more so, than their counterparts in the district's higher-income schools. They are excited for the future despite their current lot in life. They are finally beginning to believe that their ability to succeed as learners is, in no way, controlled by their environment. Helping them to focus on their work will keep them on the path to success.
My Project
About one-fifth of my 150 seventh graders are below-level due to their special education needs and/or limited mastery of the English language. Reading and writing are especially difficult for these students. Most are unable to complete the work given to the other students. These students require support with engaging, high-interest materials in order to be successful in my class. The materials requested will provide that support and will "fill in the gaps" from earlier years allowing my students to close their literary gaps. The materials will allow my students to continue participating in my class discussions with support at their level.
