Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

All 120 of my English Language Arts students are undertaking the monumental challenge of writing a novel during National Novel Writing Month. They have word count goals and this year, "A Picture is Worth a 1,000 Words." To illustrate their novels they need great art supplies and a few art lessons.

My 7th grade students are enthusiastic, creative, and talented writers who are trying to write a novel in one month.

Every day in November we all strive to meet our word count goals by writing, writing, writing. My students have embraced this marathon of a writing project with great excitement, and it is my job to keep them writing when the writing gets tough. Part of my plan to keep my young novelists motivated involves helping them incorporate artwork into their storytelling to boost their word count with pictures. Some of the books that are inspiring this idea are "The Collected Works of T.S. Spivet," "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian," and many amazing graphic novels.

My Project

Because of budget cuts my students do not get as much arts education as they once did in public schools, so I'm trying to restore the ARTS into English Language Arts. Writing a novel is a work of art in itself. One way we will enhance our novels is through images, and for this we need access to good art supplies. I am requesting artist pencils, ink pens, watercolor pencils, brushes, watercolor paper, and a how-to drawing book. We also need some inspiring books that help us imagine our settings more vividly, and for this, I have selected books from the stunning "Images of America" series that showcase old photos of our city and the diverse communities that populate it. With these art supplies and the inspiration provided by these books, we will make maps and character sketches and scene illustrations for our novels.

To be a 7th grader tackling the heroic challenge of writing a novel in a month, we need constant motivation to keep going.

One way to motivate kids is through a great classroom library, which we now have thanks to so many generous donors at Donor's Choose. Another way to motivate students to finish is if they know there will be time for illustrating at the end. With these great art supplies students will create covers, portraits, maps, and other images that will make their novels come to life!
