Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach English Language Arts and Ancient History to a wonderful group of special needs students in grades 6, 7 and 8. In each of my classes, my students have a wide range of disabilities which impede their ability to learn in a General Education setting. My students also come from low-income households which makes it difficult for them to have access to resources that could positively impact their academics. Despite the enormous challenges my students face, they are still kind, hardworking and genuinely excited to come to school to learn.
The shift to distance learning last spring has made my students confused, afraid and unmotivated, which has had an extremely negative effect on their ability to learn.
While I did my best to inspire students by holding daily online classes, recording read-alouds of high interest books and calling families for encouragement and support, I watched with a heavy heart as fewer and fewer students began to attend classes and engage.
My Project
As we continue this semester of distance learning, I want to send my students a back-to-school kit of magical, high interest books that we will study together online. I will continue to record read-alouds and engage with students through daily online lessons, but this time, students will be able to follow along with physical books rather than trying to access my voice and their books simultaneously.
You can't buy happiness, but you can buy books, and that's kind of the same thing.
Thank you so much for helping me give my students a little happiness (and an academic boost!) during these challenging times. It means the world to us.
