My Students

I work with a diverse, passionate, and curious group of students beginning their science career in high school. These students commute from throughout our county which makes their own previous experiences in science extremely varied. Our school serves a student population that is over 50% Title 1. They collaborate, discuss, and bring sense of fun to our science classroom.

These students deserve experiences that can support them seeing themselves in the field of science.

They are just beginning their journey into high school and I strive to support them seeing a possible future pathway in the sciences.

My Project

So often the voice that students hear regarding science and climate change is older, white, affluent male, but my students come from all different backgrounds, ethnicities and socioeconomic backgrounds. They are the ones of the generation that will be most impacted by this and the ones that will have to be active in dealing with the changes. We need to be aware of how this is impacting everyone, and how those impacts are affecting people differently.

Today's students are the voices of our future and they need more role models that represent who these students are, rather than relying on the words and perspectives of the traditional textbook / scientist.

This book is a collection of short stories written by women of all different backgrounds. By having a class set, my students get options about who they are learning from, and what they are learning about at the same time. Students get choice in learning about the climate movement and crisis, and they can learn from those that are representative role models for the voices that these students deserve to have. This will support me in setting up further discussion circles that will provides spaces for students to discuss this critical issue!
