This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are from low socioeconomic homes. We are a Title I school located in the inner-city of Mobile, and all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Some children come to school without proper clothing for the weather, worn or missing socks, shoes that are too small or worn. The impact of a downward economy has affected so many of our families. Our parents struggle to send many of the basic supplies, and there are many things we as teachers provide from personal resources.
Students with the greatest need for readiness skills are selected first for our Pre K program.
Children who are chosen for this opportunity have a better chance for success in school.
Our tiny learners are so excited, eager to learn, and love to come to school every day.
My Project
Most students entering Pre K aren’t able to tie their own shoes. Many of our children get themselves dressed for school and often come into the classroom with their shoes untied. My Co-teacher and I do our best to tie them and keep them tied, but we are on a tight schedule and time is of the essence.
Students who are learning to tie are often tempted to untie their own shoes in an attempt to try and tie them-they like to practice on their own shoes.
This can become a safety issue.
Children will use the lacing shoes and wooden lacing sneaker to practice their tying skills. The lace locks will be used to help keep their own shoe laces secure even if they take them loose or if they just happen to become loose.
