it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Hello friends, I am an elementary school speech language therapist in the most overcrowded community school district in New York City. All of the students I service have speech and/or language difficulties.
My students are curious minds, creative artists, playful friends, they take turns playing games with their peers, learn to make sounds, create new words and sentences, imagine real and make-believe stories, answer and ask a lot of different questions, they love to listen to and read books, and they love to learn.
My students are all sweet, motivated and very funny kindergarten-third grade students with a range of learning disabilities including ADHD, Intellectual Disability, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Auditory Processing Disorder, and Speech and Language Delay. They work extremely hard to overcome their challenges and are the most resilient little people you will ever meet. They need additional outlets and specific materials for learning, to keep their attention to task, reinforce their behaviors positively, engage them, and expand their skills.
My Project
Going through countless ink cartridges, laminating pouches and paper is one of the most costly expenses teachers and therapists spend their own money on. The reason we do this, is so that our students can utilize materials that are engaging, motivating, fun and effective. We print in color so that the visual learners can have a clearer picture, gain better understanding and have an inviting environment to learn in. I constantly create, customize, and personalize the materials I use with my students. I need the resources I create to be durable and long lasting, so I laminate them for added measure. Having the supplies to do all of this would be a ginormous help.
Learning in color can make all the difference, and having engaging materials is the first step!
Children with speech and language difficulties rely on visual supports to guide them, and use them consistently until they have mastered a skill. Research studies show, that color plays a significant role in enhancing memory performance. Color peaks the young learners interest and helps engage them. Having the appropriate materials in my room can promote the student to generalize the skills learned, and use them for their overall speech, language, and/or literacy growth.
Some of the materials that will be made with these supplies include, articulation games, language activities, visual cues, picture cards, banners, and other various student projects. Most importantly these materials will be printed on card stock, laminated and will last the entire school year and years beyond. This will allow me to be creative for my students, and use materials in my lesson planing that are supportive, can be used for differentiated instruction and are specifically for each child served.
