Help me give my students the creative and engaging non-fiction book series "You Wouldn't Want To Live Without..." so they learn and enjoy at the same time.
There are so many things that my students wonder about. They often ask me tons of questions. I want them to develop a strong sense of the world around them. I want to help them answer these burning questions. I want them to learn about history and why the past is so important for their future.
My students want to come to a classroom to learn and they want to enjoy it at the same time.
This year I'm teaching an ICT class (Integrated Co-Teaching). Half of the students are students with special needs.
My students are from an inner city community located in New York City. Our school is a Title I school that receives funding for many intervention services such as reading, math and English as a second language. Each student receives free breakfast and lunch daily. Every year it seems to get harder and harder to supply students with the necessary tools for school.
My Project
My students need and want to read non-fiction books so that they can learn about the things they use every day. I want them to learn about many of the things that they wonder about; from boogers, to poop, to dirt, to soap, to bumble bees.
Why are these every day items we use so important?
That's what I want my students to learn.
The "You wouldn't want to live without..." series allows kids to learn in a fun and entertaining way. These non-fiction books are funny and very kid friendly. They speak to kids due to the way they are written in a humorous fashion and an easy friendly language that will make the students want to learn more. This is what non-fiction should embody. Students should want to read more and learn more, and that's what I hope these books will do for them. My students will also begin to answer many of the questions that they have and pose to me on a daily basis.
When my students leave my classroom at the end of the year, and begin middle school, they always leave with a wealth of knowledge they didn't have before.
I stress the importance of non-fiction texts to my students, because when you get older, most of what you are interested in and read deals with real facts. My students will be learning specific non-fiction reading skills like finding the main idea, creating inferences and summarizing. Along with other skills like developing a thesis statement based on what they read and then supporting that thesis statement with text support.
