My Students

There is a song from the musical Cabaret about money making the world go round. The lack of money has stopped our world of Theater from going round. We have added a exciting new course to our Performing Arts Department this year. Unfortunately, there is no funding whatsoever for materials.

My students are an amazing group of kids who have found themselves immersed in something that most of them never expected to be exposed to.

Theater! There really is no business like show business and my students are getting a taste of all facets of the Performing Arts. Singing, acting, dancing, set design and construction, sound, lighting, costuming, choreography for the stage, make-up, hair, and more gives the students exposure and knowledge about the many facets of a theatrical production. Most of them have never been to the theater and this entry level course will hopefully open doors to this magical world for them. We have a large Performing Arts Department and many advanced students but this class is a means of discovery for many who want to pursue further study in the Arts.

My Project

We are requesting art supplies for our Set Design Project. We have selected the musical "In The Heights" and each student will become a Broadway set designer. They will create a small scale mock-up complete with all of the buildings on the actual Broadway set. In a shoe box, the students will create an immigrant neighborhood complete with the skyline backdrop, a corner market, a taxi stand, a beauty salon and a Grandmother's house. They will use paper, paints, paint brushes, pencils, glue and the other requested items to make theatrical magic happen in their small box sized set. We will display their sets in our annual Art Show as our class contribution.

Creativity is a wonderful thing and fostering creativity is something that we all must do for kids.

Every professional set designer started somewhere and who is to say that there is not a future one sitting in my classroom right now. This project could be the spark needed to start someone on a path to a career. Who knows? For all of my students it will be a fun project that will let them explore their creative side.
