My students need these differentiated books, such as Treasure Island Graphic novel because it will help visual processing, comprehension, and reading fluency on an accessible level.
I work in a school that supports full inclusion for all students; it is also a core knowledge school. Therefore the students learn the classics. The community in the school is diverse, and it shows in every classroom; the majority of students are from Eutopia. We are also a title 1 school, which means we have a high number of students from low-income families.
My 4th and 5th-grade special education students want to achieve, and this is only getting stronger every day as they discover who they are and what they want.
As fourth and fifth grade students, they are also, taking over the responsibility on their IEP (individual education plan), by asking teachers for their accommodations, and understanding their goals. As the year goes on they are advocating more and more for their needs with other teachers and myself. They also love to laugh and be really silly. Right now, in literacy, we are reading Midsummer Night's Dream, so every day is spent laughing. I cannot wait for more laughing as the year goes on.
My Project
Reading is the foundation of all knowledge, which is why the Core Knowledge curriculum utilizes it. Though reading the classics students delve into literature in a meaningful way. They can make connections with other books, history, science, art, and music through reading. The Core Knowledge system also believes that regardless of ability, everyone should read the books. Our school does not currently have any adapted versions of these books for students who need a different way to access the material. Therefore, I want to get differentiated books to help the students that need more visual cues and need a lower level in order to understand and achieve.
These books will help struggling students and special educations students to access the grade level curriculum at a level they can comprehend and read.
All students need appropriate learning opportunities that fit their grade and level but, still pushes them. The donations for this project will have an affect on student learning, comprehension and reading skills.
Please consider donating to this project. Thank you!
