I am a first grade teacher at a Title I school where 44% of our student population participates in our free breakfast and lunch program. Also, a significant number of our student population are English Language Learners. Our families come from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds.
Many or most of my students have never attended a dramatic production. The opportunity to see the costumes, props, scenery, music and actors COME ALIVE on stage would be such a fulfilling and exciting experience for these children.
The play that we would like to attend is "Miss Nelson is Missing", presented by the California Theater Center. I have 22 students and anticipate having three adult chaperones in attendance as well.
I know that this experience will help the students when we do our own plays in the classroom. I feel that "acting" in our own plays will build self-confidence, and strengthen reading skills. This opportunity will be one that the children will remember for a long time.
