This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work at a STEM magnet middle school in Indiana. This means that my students chose to come to our school to learn more about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.
My seventh and eighth graders come from all around the city to form a community where we focus on our core values of rigor, community, relationships, and drive.
My students come from diverse cultures and experiences, and some overcome significant obstacles to succeed at our school. In their two short years with us, they come in as young pre-teens and develop into teenagers prepared to flourish in high school!
My Project
I am requesting 5 different middle school books by BIPOC authors from Mahogany Books, a BIPOC-owned company. These books will be part of our end-of-year book fair, where students will get to pick a book to take home for the summer! 40% of my students identify as BIPOC, and I hope to offer them an opportunity to read something from their own perspective. Please check out my other projects featuring books from the LatinX perspective With my Latin X students in mind. Of course, all of these books will be available to all of my students because it is important that everyone reads stories and gain perspective from multiple points of view!
Nearly all students from low‑income households
