All the Colors of the Rainbow for a Multicultural Classroom
Help me give my students a great beginning of the school year with Crayola and colored pencils art supplies that depict their skin colors and books for socio-emotional awareness.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school has over 500 students in grades PK-5. In addition to regular education classrooms, we have a Dual Language classroom in every grade. We are located in the South Bronx. We are a Title I school. More than 80 percent of the school receives free lunch. More than 70 percent of our students are Hispanics and over 25 percent are black. Our students are at a financial disadvantage.
My class has a group of special students in the school.
They are new in the country and have language barriers, academic needs, and financial needs. They are forming new cultural identities while they work in their English, math, reading, and writing.
My class needs different ways to get engage and develop their identity. I would love to have different transformations in the year. These are unit celebrations in which the whole classroom is transformed or decorated to the theme of study.
My Project
Minority students have been invisible for too long. Itś time for our children to see themselves in the classrooms and with the supplies they need to represent themselves in their work. The Crayola people colors will help them create their projects with their skin tones. All colors are beautiful! The books Wild About Us, Nuestra clase es una familial, El nino invisible, La amabilidad es mi superpoder, and other books in the list will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom but also build a socio-emotional library with books in their language. All of these books have been chosen with my students well being in mind.
By donating to this project, you will not only help to improve reading skills but also develop their multicultural identity.
Students will become more confident as readers, students, and more importantly as persons.
