Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from a high poverty area. They have many obstacles to overcome before they even get to school. Many are ESL newcomers who are adjusting to a new environment. Some are home alone while their parents are working. They may be living with grandparents or in foster care because of situations they have no control over. Several are ADD, ADHD, or Autistic.
Incredibly, they mostly come with a heart full of love and a desire to learn.
My partner teacher and I have a variety of ability levels in our classroom.
My Project
In an elementary classroom, there is a lot of learning going on simultaneously at any given minute. My students use technology daily across content areas. Having functioning headphones will enable my kids to tune out all the distractions and focus on what they are learning.
Hurricane Harvey created a lot of stress and uncertainty in our community this school year.
I am accustomed to being able to buy supplies for my classroom. This school year, however, I lost my home during the flooding in Houston, TX. I had students and their families who showed up to help tear out drywall and damaged belongings. Daily, they ask how my house is coming along. Five months later, I am still living in a hotel as I rebuild my home.
We are blessed with access to technology, but the lack of headphones keeps us from fully utilizing computers and iPads in our classroom.
