My Students

In my English II honors classroom, you will meet around 26 kids who differ in socioeconomic, religious background, and ethnicity. While they vary in personal experiences, all have in common that they struggle to read and write. These foundational skills make it almost impossible to explore the literary works of so many great authors, such as Edgar Allan Poe, Lewis Caroll, and many more. Many of my students learn better when they hear the text read aloud to them.

My students are at a significant disadvantage, but I know that they can achieve great things and positively impact society with the right tools.

My students can make more real-world connections and find interest in literature when they understand major plot points and developments. You might question how students at a lower literacy rate are capable of being honors, the simple answer is that they represent those of our population that are striving to improve and overcoming obstacles despite their short comings.

My Project

For many people, the longing for material good extends beyond the needs of survival. My students will explore the concept of what drives our passion for things. My students will read various genres to contribute to the essential question, what do our possessions reveal about us? The Necklace by Guy de Maupassant and The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald contribute to the exploration of what makes something valuable.

My method of teaching will involve a blended learning model.

By giving students a copy of the book, they will read sections at home. This semester, I will focus on the importance of annotations. This skill will reinforce active reading and set students up for success in future endeavors such as college courses. I will also instill in students the importance o completing the independent study and reading for academics and fun. The hope is to provide students with a sense of accountability and responsibility. I know that students will rise to the occasion when given the tools to succeed.
