Celebrate Black Teachers and Students
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Students in my class walk into a homey environment each morning. We start our day with pack time, this is a time in which we come together as a class and work on developing character traits such as honesty, kindness, and tolerance. We practice building one another up as we share our thoughts, feelings, dreams, and struggles.
Many of our students are behind in early literacy skills from the start, they need texts that can be modeled for them. It is our hope that using a new program that revolves around texts will help students deepen their knowledge about story structure and help to guide their comprehension.
These students come from very little, but they are capable of so much. Many are on free/reduced lunch, come from split households, and worry about things no eight-year-old should.
Our school is leaning towards the future and how we can better prepare our students for life, college, and a career. We currently serve over 700 students at our school, and yet we receive very little funding.
My Project
These books are essential for a new reading program. Each week's instruction will revolve around one of these texts. The lessons are made to help students go beyond the text. Many of my students do not have at home modeling when it comes to reading fluency or comprehension.
These texts will give students a broad variety of genres, perspectives, and interests to help capture attention for the most effective lessons possible. We invested in the Shark Week set, and the students were so engaged in the non-fiction text features! They were excited to get to reading and share their experiences and connections. It is my hope that next year every week is as engaging as shark week was this year!
