My students are eager, bright, and like all students, excited to experience all the current learning that this 21st century can bring them. They love art each week, walking in with huge smiles and open hearts. "The future belongs to young people with an education and the imagination to create." –President Barack Obama
Inquisitive, creative, artistic, and ready to explore art across the curriculum.
Yes, this describes my student population! I teach art education to over 420 students per week. As an educator, I am always on a quest to teach my students skills that will help them both in school and in life beyond. We love discovering innovative ways to connect art to other subjects and to create a safe and caring environment in our classroom for all students.
My Project
In the art room I teach all the students in the school, including my wonderful Special Education students, who often love the creative and free spirit of an art room. Yes, my classroom is a beautiful blend of learners and it's so important that all students feel welcome and enjoy learning in my classroom. I am always crossing curriculum, and this project would connect the Visual Arts to both Science and Math for all my students. I want to teach them how to draw the human figure by graphing and using a grid technique. It is so important for students to see that the human body is filled with shapes and proportions.
There really is a scientific and mathematical system for drawing the human body, and if all students, including those with Special Needs, learn the skills for drawing and enlarging, they will be able to skillfully draw their subject with comfort!
This skill will last them a lifetime, and using this drawing light will create a lifelong skill.
My students are presently studying Egypt, and the Egyptians used the grid drawing system to create their visual stories for the people. A light drawing board will allow all my students to transfer with ease and understanding their images onto fine drawing paper, using both mathematical and scientific skills. These skills will be combined with observation drawing, using shapes and forms and creating a grid, all excellent tools to drawing. In the past we use the windows in our room, but there is not enough space for all the students to do that. I would like to add a few light drawing boards to our Art room, so we can accomplish this task with ease and in the 21st century way.
