My students are amazing and resilient. Many are immigrants or from immigrant families. Many are affected by being homeless and neighborhood violence but come to school everyday ready to learn.
In a neighborhood where violence is an everyday part of life, school becomes so much more than just a place to learn.
The students in my classroom recognize the value of an education as a means to a positive future and hopefully, someday a safer community as well.
Our students are English Language Learners in an urban neighborhood. School is their safe haven and a place where they can focus on a positive future. They are eager to learn and take pride in the investment of others in their education.
My Project
We have converted our classroom to flexible seating to better meet the needs of all learners. Many of my students need to be able to move around the room to meet their learning needs. I have student with ADHD, emotional needs and learning disabilities who are thriving with our new classroom environment. The struggle now is staying organized. These drawers will give them a place to store their supplies. The colored pencils will help me keep all areas of the classroom stocked. This way students can find what they need close to their favorite spots to sit. It is so important to me that every student feels welcome and safe and that needs are important.
