This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I want my students to be able to write and share their stories ...they are brilliant and their ideas will change the world!
They are continuation school students trying for a second chance in a system that has failed them once before.
Because they are still trying to graduate high school, they are the bravest and most determined students I've ever worked with. They meet their many daily obstacles with perseverance. Many are juggling trying to finish school by attending our alternative project-based program AND night schools in the evening, family obligations, trying to stay on track, and experiences of trauma. Our small school offers them more of what they need to succeed, but we lack the resources to fund the more comprehensive technology that other schools of often wealthier student populations can afford.
My Project
With Chromebooks my students will be able to increase their digital competency while working on different action projects each semester. They are currently learning about gentrification in their quickly changing city. Access to computers will help them in developing their projects as well as help them produce the podcasts they will present at the end of the semester to the community during our exhibitions. They will be going out into different neighborhoods of the city to record interviews and take photographs. To effectively produce high quality work and make the difference they are determined to make, they need the support of technology!
Though my students have too often faced obstacles when trying to access the education they deserve, they have not given up.
Almost all have goals of continuing their education beyond their high school graduation. I do my students a disservice if I cannot provide the access to technology and digital skill-building that they will need for life outside of my classroom, especially since that access is not available in their homes. Please help my students step into the digital age!
