My Students

My students inspire and surprise me all of the time! I have the privilege of working with small groups of learners who work hard, collaborate, and continue to build their reading stamina and language skills every day. We live in a small mountain community in Northern California. My first through fifth-grade students, many of whom are Dual-language Learners, need additional support with reading, writing, and language development. They thrive in learning environments where they feel safe taking risks; where they perceive reading and writing as positive and attainable; and where they know their voices will be heard and honored by those around them.

My students are eager learners who speak a variety of languages, demonstrate unique learning needs, and respond well to rich & engaging instructional approaches.

My students have loving, supportive families who want them to succeed, so we want to provide them with as many tools as possible to help them do so during distance learning! (We all know that this is a daunting task, for a variety of reasons, and we want to remove as many obstacles as possible!)

My Project

iPads bring distance-learning lessons to life! I can use an iPad in lieu of a document camera, and use the mirroring feature during Zoom lessons to use share what I am doing with my students and bring my teaching to the next level. I attended a training on how to use an iPad as a whiteboard, and I can think of multiple uses for teaching reading, writing, word work, and ELD with this tool!

I have also asked my colleagues who have iPads how they are using them right now and have heard about a variety of ways that I can increase student engagement, monitor student reading, model writing, give clear student feedback, and see all of my students while teaching!

One teacher shared about an app that would allow me to inventory my classroom library, and then use that to help students select and check out books, while simultaneously allowing me to track reading and distribution. Another shared the benefits of using the Apple pencil to model writing and letter formation, as well as to edit student writing in realtime. I have also heard that it makes it easier to give feedback on student work in Seesaw and to then adjust my instruction accordingly. And, finally, I have learned about the classroom-management benefits of using an iPad for modeling instruction, so I can use my computer to see all of my students on gallery view in Zoom--something that cannot be done while only using a laptop in this capacity.

Thank you so much for helping to provide me with an iPad and Apple pen to improve my instruction, bolster student learning, and increase engagement for all!
