My Project
I am heading into my second year as a school adjustment counselor. The students I work with are creative, compassionate, and inquisitive. I am fortunate to work in a building that holds student mental health at the same level as academics and the arts.
Students can't be successful in school when their mental health and social-emotional needs aren't being met.
I provide a safe space where students can be who they are and begin to learn about themselves and the world around them. My role is to listen, learn, and support. When meeting with students, we focus on their mental health and well-being and social-emotional learning.
Prior to becoming a counselor, I was a teacher and instructional coach. Being a new counselor comes with a lot of responsibility and not enough resources. The items on my list will help me build my toolbox so I can successfully support students in reaching their goals.
Each resource I chose will serve a purpose in getting students to meet their social-emotional goals. Goals range from managing anxiety to building relationship skills and everything in between. I've requested social skills games and activities to help students learn new skills in a fun way while also being able to practice applying them in safe space. Some of the activities I plan require supplies such as play-doh, construction paper, and glue.
I've also requested weighted stuffed animals, lap pads, and fabric as they help students who experience sensory challenges. They can reduce anxiety and create a sense of calm. The diffuser, ear muffs, fidgets, coloring book, expandable breathing toy, and jelly board are all used as coping strategies to support emotional regulation and reduce escalation.
Mental health is a priority, and I know students can gain the skills and strategies with the right resources.
