This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
What motivates struggling students to stay in school? I teach Theatre Arts to students in 6-8th grade in an urban middle school in Southern California that is under-resourced. We are a Title 1 school with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch.
Many of my students have below basic reading levels and deal with outside obstacles that make it difficult to learn.
Research tells us that middle school is the time when most students will decide to stay in school or drop out. With so many challenges, it can be difficult to convince students that education is the answer to a better life, which makes it difficult to close the ever-widening achievement gap.
Despite all this, my students enter my classroom inspired to learn about Theatre Arts and are willing to take risks to expand their perspective. Through Theatre Arts, I'm able to teach skills like concentration, empathy, trust, imagination, self-confidence, and ensemble building; life skills that I hope will help them far into the future.
My Project
In my Theatre Arts class, students work together in groups to earn points for being on time to class, bringing all of their supplies, doing their homework, participating in Theatre activities, and following our classroom behavior expectations. Because they are working in small cooperative literacy groups, students are accountable to each other and are not just working for their own gain. This helps to motivate them to work even harder to earn points. At the end of the week, the group with the most points earns a raffle ticket for the end of the semester raffle contest. Two Chromebook computers would be fantastic top prizes for this raffle and would help to motivate my students to do their best each and every day.
