I teach a preschool class of 20 incredible four and five-year-olds. My school includes preschool through second grade. I am responsible for helping these students learn about both themselves and their classmates. I am also responsible for helping each of my students feel important and special. The earlier we, as teachers, empower our students, the more likely they are to be successful in school and in life. Unfortunately, many children are made to feel unimportant or embarrassed by their differences. The earlier we help children learn to accept one another as each one is, the more successful we will be in guidig our students to be all that they can be. This leads me to my request, which pertains to adding more multiculturalism/ diversity into my class. I would like to include books, minipulatives, musical instruments, art materials, costumes, and pictures. I will have most of the books in the reading center for the children; however, books will be included in all centers. Manipulatives would include things such as puzzles, matching games, counters, and games that would expose the children to a variety of cultures and diversities. Art materials would include multicultural paints, markers, crayons, and other materials that encourage my goal. Musical instruments and costumes would involve adding authentic instruments and costumes that represent other cultures. Finally, I would like to have pictures that show children of many cultures and diversities to display around my room. The children will be exposed to these items on a daily basis. All these things will help my students gain an understanding and appreciation for diversity as we learn how we are alike and how we are different--as we learn how we are all so very SPECIAL!
