Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

It is approaching the start of a new school year. I want to ensure I have the necessary materials to facilitate some fun and interactive S.T.E.A.M. activities that foster a culture of community in my classroom at the start of this school year.

Creating challenging yet fun STEAM-based team-building activities is the perfect way to kick off the school year.

Students will then come to school excited to see what new activities we will be doing, and we will also create a culture where everyone’s voice is valued and heard.

The gummy worms and gummy life savers will be used in an activity called 'Save Fred,' where students must collaborate on how to get the life saver around Fred's neck to save him without using their hands. Some of the tape and straws will be for the tallest straw tower challenge, where students have 5 minutes to collaborate and plan, and 10 minutes to construct the tallest free-standing tower. Finally, the rest of the tape and different-colored paper will be used in a challenge where students must build a mystery structure that is identical to the one the teacher created. The catch: the structure is hidden from view, and the materials are all mixed up with different groups. All of these challenges are the students' favorites each year and help kick off the school year, encouraging them to collaborate with one another.

The tape and Teachers Pay Teachers gift card will be used for activities and challenges that I have found that teachers have created. These activities will provide hands-on learning and fun challenges that will help extend the math and science curriculum.
