My Project

I am responsible for 5th-8th grade middle school students who I refer to as scientists in training. What I enjoy about my students is that even though they come from challenging backgrounds, they do not allow this to stop them from learning. As their teacher, it is my job to prepare them to think as scientists and engineers. One of the most important tools that a scientist and engineer uses is a resource binder.

An interactive science binder is a strategy for students to record and reflect on inquiry-based observations, activities, investigations, and experiments in order to increase their understanding of science instruction.

In addition, science binders are also an excellent tool for students to communicate their understanding of science concepts, for teachers to provide students with feedback, and, finally, to assess students. Science binders are also a way for teachers to integrate science experiences with literacy and mathematics because they combine science inquiry, written communication, and data using measurement. Most importantly, science binders are modeled after the way scientists really work, and each scientist’s notebook is unique to that person, area of inquiry, type of experiment, and investigation. Student scientists record their observations, ideas, drawings, and other illustrations such as charts, tables, models, and graphs, along with their questions, ideas, and reflections in a running record of their thinking.

When creating an interactive science binder, in addition to the binder itself, each of my students will need a pack of post-it notes, dividers, and a composition notebook. Students will use the composition book for notetaking, journal writing, and for scientific experiments. The post-it notes will be used as dividers for the composition books. The dividers will be used to label scientific resources, classwork, and assessments. The binder will keep everything safe and neat.
