My students need a heavy duty pencil sharpener, tabletop writing center, 10 bin storage center, and supply caddies to organize all our writing materials and resources.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We have just started the school year and I can already see that many of my students have a real interest in writing. I am hoping to organize all my writing materials in a central location so my students can focus on growing as writers rather than on where to find the materials they need.
I currently have 17 third grade students.
They are a diverse group, coming from different ethnic backgrounds, financial circumstances, and living situations. I am still getting to know my new class, but I can see that they also have different writing abilities and interests. So far, many of them seem interested in writing and have enjoyed writing in their Writer's Notebooks. At the same time, there are a few that are struggling writers that I will need to work closely with.
My Project
The materials I am requesting will allow me to put all of our writing materials and resources in a central location so that all of my students will know where to find what they need without my assistance. The desktop writing center will be used to store items such as pens, pencils, scissors, and paper in one place. I will use the 10-bin storage center to store items like fancy publishing paper, grading rubrics, and other resources that can be used by students during the writing process. Our current pencil sharpener is showing signs of wear, so the pencil sharpener I am requesting will replace that one. The caddies will be used for each group to hold their crayons, pens, pencils, and other items that we use throughout the day. By having all of our resources in a centralized location, my students will be able to work more independently during Writer's Workshop.
This year, I really want to focus on working with students to improve the quality of their writing by conducting writing conferences.
To be most effective, I will need to ask students not to interrupt during these conferencing times. If all of our writing materials and resources are located in a central location, my students will be able to work more independently. They also will be able to find and use these materials without needing to interrupt my conferences with other students.
