Mrs. Roark from Littcarr KY is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

All Kinds of Children

My students need a collection of leveled books to support their individual reading levels and to expose them to cultural diversity. I'm also requesting book bags and bins.

My Students

Expose my students to the diverse ways of life through books! My students do not have an inclusive set of leveled readers that expose them to the many cultures and diverse lifestyles and this needs to change!

I serve twenty-two, first grade students who live in the heart of the mountains of Eastern Kentucky.

They are bright, energetic, and extremely eager learners. They are at a very critical time in their lives, the beginning stage of reading. Their focus should be on learning, rather than what they don't have or what they need. Help make this possible for my students.

My Project

I'm requesting the complete set of King School series and three additional titles of each for guided reading. This is a time in which comprehension, word attack strategies, phonemic awareness, and other skills are reinforced within small groups. These are the perfect books to expose them to diversity. The books mirror the diversity of today's classroom and represent various ethnicities and come from a variety of family structures. They will be able to identify with these characters. My hope is that once they read just one book about their favorite characters, they will clamor for more. Also, I'm requesting take home reading bags, providing a means for students to take the books home and reread with their parents. This will develop fluency and allow for open discussions. The bins will provide a means to store the books for self-selected reading time, a time to read for enjoyment.

Donations to this project will bring us closer to receiving these much needed books.

Students need to be exposed to the different ways of life, and they need to know that it is okay to be different. These books will provide opportunities for such. Be a part of giving a gift that will continue to give year after year, the gift of cultural diversity.
