My Students

I don't just teach music: I teach CHILDREN through music.

In my music classroom, I teach children to become creative problem solvers through the study and creation of the arts!

I am the only music teacher in my PreK-5th grade school, so, on any given day, I teach 4-year-olds through my young adult 11 year-olds. I teach show choir, general music, and band. My school is in a sweet, rural southern town with no traffic light but a LOT of heart. The students in my school come from our town and also from the slightly larger town next to us, as we house the county's English Language Learner program. Many of my students come from low socio-economic situations, so providing the materials they need to succeed is really important for their futures.

In my classroom, we prioritize singing, dancing, playing, and creating with JOY to become humans who can participate in the music of our culture and creative problem solvers who will tackle our country's biggest problems as adults. My students have the potential to change the world. . . with just a little help from YOU!

My Project

You know, they say that all kids today care about are their phones. That may be true, but I'm pretty sure they're talking about XYLOphones!! We need an alto xylophone so each of my students can have their own instruments in class.

My students will tell you: the best days in class are days we play instruments!

As an Orff educator, I'm trained on how to use classroom xylophones to teach students a variety of musical skills, from rhythm to timbre to melody to form. But the most important thing that these instruments teach my students is the most critical thing I teach: these instruments are a vehicle for my students to become CREATIVE BEINGS.

The purpose of music education isn't to make an elite squad of future professional musicians (though that is a nice byproduct!) The purpose of music education is to teach ALL students to be creative. Using this xylophone, my students will learn not to be consumers, but to be creators. Students will learn to make their own melodies. They'll learn to play in front of others and improvise, which are public speaking skills. They'll learn to play as an ensemble, which is a team-building skill. They'll learn how to think creatively to put small pieces of music together to make bigger pieces of music, which teaches processing skills. They'll learn to brainstorm together and try each other's ideas, which promotes cooperation and collaborative work.

Our world is full of big problems, and music class is where kids learn creative thinking skills that our future leaders will need to solve those big problems. That's a pretty amazing set of skills that can come from one alto xylophone!

My students and I thank you for considering our project!!
