My school is in a small, close-knit, rural community where the children come from a variety of backgrounds. The students in my class enjoy coming to school each day and are ready to take on the fun and challenges of fifth grade.
In our classroom, I am responsible to teach all academic subjects, (Math, Reading, Writing, Science and Social Studies) and I am especially blessed this year, because my my scholars absolutely love to read and write!
I strive each year to create more student choice in my classroom and to use student input to drive my instructional focus.
Have you ever sat on a cold, hard floor to work on a project or to listen to a story? Well up until a few weeks ago, my students hadn't either. Because of a certain mishap, our classroom carpet had to be removed and it left our room cold and unwelcoming.
I pride myself in creating a warm and welcoming environment as my kids come to me each year, and this year was no different.
I utilize the back of my room, where my carpet once was, to meet at the beginning of the day to check in with my kids and set the tone for the day. This is also a place that allows kids room to relax when I read them a good book or to sit in a peace circle to discuss topics in a safe and comfortable setting. Some of my students even like to use this area to spread out materials for a project or to work with their Book Club.
I believe if we can make our classrooms more inviting, students will enjoy their time with us and will give us their best effort!
