Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Ms., this is my family." Walk down our hallways, spend time in our classrooms, and this is what you'll hear all around you. Our school is a Title I school with approximately 80% of our kids living below the poverty line. The majority of our students are ESL, all fighting to learn the language as well as the content delivered in the classroom. My students learn in whatever way they can, which means we get a little creative all the time.
We are a family at our school.
Students rely on the teachers for education, support, and love. Each morning and afternoon, students meet in "their family" to plan for the day and later, to reflect on the day. The teacher or "parent" is the family advocate.
My Project
Nearly five years ago, a group of students came to me and asked me to sponsor an after school drama club at our school. Fast forward to the present and now we are running a full theatre arts program, including multiple competitions a year. The materials I have requested are different things that will help the students fully understand the experience of telling a story. Whether that means creating fire on stage, fireflies across the trees, or turning the students into fairies, animals, or anything we can imagine together. My students know that any story is possible if we truly try.
They want to make sure these stories are told.
I try to lead plays that are entertaining but that also mean something to the students. This includes plays about children in the Holocaust, plays about young people standing up for what's right, and plays about the issues young people must deal with today.
