My students attend a rural school in California.

They love to work on collaborative projects and read in literature groups. They are savvy enough to understand Van Allsburg books and appreciate his art too. I love the wonderment in their eyes on the last page of a Van Allsburg book!

My Project

Chris Van Allsburg is an author and illustrator that creates amazing books. His picture books are anything but simple. If Jumanji, Polar Express, and Zathura can be turned into full-length films, the books they are based on must be sophisticated! My students love his books and crave more!

Fifth grade is such a transitional year.

Students still like to sit on the rug and experience a read-aloud, but they also desire the sophistication that is offered by authors like Chris Van Allsburg. These are books that my students will never forget!
