Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my 11th grade English class are all early English learners. In my classes, you can see students discussing, collaborating, debating, and challenging each other to understand the world around them, all while grappling with their developing English at various levels. Remote learning has severely decreased opportunities for practicing English daily.

The students represent the diversity of immigrant communities living in Boston.

Students come from several countries and speak more than a dozen different languages. The common experience is that all students are working to improve their literacy while navigating life in the US and during an international pandemic. These students are motivated, but face many challenges that make school hard. My classroom aims to build community by honoring all students' rich experiences while helping them use language to share their perspectives and respond to others' stories.

My Project

With this year's remote learning, we have even more of a need to hold and physical books, turn the pages, discuss them with our peers, and fall in love with reading. I'm turning away from purely independent reading this year to build and nurture a community of readers through book groups. I would like to offer students a diverse array of books that will capture their interest, bolster their new-language literacy, and inspire conversations about literature and life.

These books will help make sure students are holding onto a reading community even though our idea of "school" has been turned upside down.

All of these books were chosen with the interests, skill levels, and English development of my students in mind. It is so difficult to find literature that is appropriate for the ages, background experiences, and English levels of my students, so this list was carefully curated to meet a variety of needs. It is my hope that by offering students a choice of rich texts and a community in which to discuss them, they will not only improve their literacy and critical thinking in English, but they will be voracious readers and lovers of books.
