Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a Title 1 charter school that serves K-12 students from diverse backgrounds in south east San Diego. Our current population is approximately 60% Hispanic/Latino, 20% African American/Black, 18% Asian, and 2% White/Caucasian. Our school believes in fostering high academic standards, ensuring emotional and social growth, and maintaining a safe and secure learning environment for all of our students. We bring higher education to the forefront of expectations for the future of our students, anticipating 100% college attendance after high school graduation. This is important to us because many of our children do not come from families with college experience.

I am a kindergarten teacher at our school.

I have 26 students in my class this year who represent various backgrounds, strengths and abilities. We are learning how to be productive students, curious learners and good citizens. This year half of my children entered kindergarten without necessary letter recognition or phonetic awareness, so I am excited to see how much they grow as we learn to read, write and discover new things together!

My Project

My kinder friends need a fun and engaging learning environment! With today's rigorous kindergarten learning standards, it is important to nurture curious minds by creating exciting and developmentally appropriate educational opportunities.

My class is in need of materials to enhance our language arts and math curriculum with activities that foster creativity and hands on experiences.

Instead of being bound to paper and pencils, young learners need ways to make learning come alive. I will use items like base ten blocks, beads threaded on pipe cleaners, tweezers, and dot stamps to engage fine motor skills and creativity during counting and addition practice. I will also use items like magnetic letters, wipe off pockets, wiki sticks and pocket charts with letter/picture matching cards to run literacy centers that allow students to explore phonetic principles which lay the foundation for reading and writing.

I want my students to love coming to school and for them to have opportunities to encounter learning that engages their minds, bodies, and spirits. Having these materials will give them the chance to do just that!
