My Project
I love my students' excitement to independently explore and express what they are learning. When they discover patterns, make connections, figure out a stragegy or find and fix their own mistake, their joy is contagious! To me, this is the root to growing a life long learner. My goal for this project is to provide students with current research based interactive, hands-on engagement for learning. The phonics boards allows students to manipulate sounds and discover patterns for building reading and spelling skills. The math board promotes individual strategies, enhances participation in small or whole group, and can be creatively used in creative ways for intervention or center activities. The classroom books "What Should Darla Do?" and "What Should Danny Do?" promote reading with a purpose for personal reflection, and deeper thinking while teaching self regulation and important emotional social skills through the power of choosing. They are a perfect example of interacting with a book by asking questions and making connections to real life as the books puts the characters in real life situations then gives the students options of choices with different outcomes based on how they chose to respond. It's an opportunity for students to practice life skills and understand how their choices impact people and have consequences. This is a powerful tool connecting literacy to life and being able to self-regulate emotions to become a compassionate and collaborative community member. As a small multigrade K-2 classroom, our class is like a family. These resources will help to promote community by allowing flexibility for use in individual work or collaborating in pairs, small groups, or whole group lessons. All of these resources are a win-win for strenghening not only my students' math and reading skills, but a love for learning through hands-on engagement which promotes life long learning.
