All Ears on Reading

My students need a listening center and a collection of books on CD, including "Green Eggs and Ham".

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Holland's classroom raised $572

Second grade is the crucial year in which a child can either become a lifelong reader or a struggling reader. I teach second grade at a high poverty school and my students are in great need of reading resources. Many have grown up with either no books or only a very few books in their home and therefore lack preparation to take the second grade leap from learning to read to reading to learn. They need all the help they can get to become independent, fluent readers.

My students need more resources than most just to catch up to grade level standards, yet are presented with inadequate materials. This past year, the only books that most of my students had to read at home or school were those that I brought to them through a classroom library compiled with the generosity of a local book bank. My students enjoyed reading our classroom books, but what they loved most was reading with a partner. This gave them the opportunity to listen and read along while someone else read and then go back and continue to practice on their own. The ability to interact with a book by both reading and listening increased their motivation to read and helped them to improve. More reading materials and options would continue to increase their reading growth.

My students had no listening center materials for the entire past year. It would be heartbreaking to deny my students this upcoming year what should be an essential component of every classroom. That is why I am requesting a listening center and the beginning materials to be used in conjunction with the center itself, including some books and tapes/Cd's at various reading levels and a variety of reading interests.

A classroom cannot function to it's greatest ability without the necessary resources. Teachers are on the front lines of education and do make huge changes in the lives of children, but the community and supporters like you are really the ones that make it possible for children to excel in the face of overwhelming challenges inside and outside the classroom. Your donation will make a difference in many students lives and will help them to become confident lifelong readers and learners.
