My students need books that serve as windows and mirrors. They need high quality art supplies to create portraits that showcase their unique differences.

My Students
Students come from all walks of life at our school. We celebrate diversity on a daily basis and look for ways to create a learning environment that appeals to all types of learners. We celebrate various learning styles and embrace the differences that make us all unique. This year our class includes multi-language learners, students with hearing impairments and students benefiting from various sensory integration strategies. We are nestled in a south side Chicago neighborhood, walking distance from a large university.
My Project
I am requesting a variety of books that allow children to see themselves and others portrayed in high quality literature. Books like "I am Enough", "Ode to the Fresh Cut" and "Pink is for Boys" will allow students to explore and celebrate the ways we are different. Books such as "All are Welcome" and "Be Kind" will create a narrative structure for building community and establishing a society of kindness in the classroom.
Stories will provide windows into various cultures and ideas, as well as reflections of students in a powerful and positive context.
Students will use the multi-cultural paint sets and sulphite paper to create self portraits. This project will set a foundation for creating a community of learners that encourage one another and grow intellectually and emotionally.
