This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach elementary and middle school students in an urban school. My students are full of energy, creativity, and talent.
My students love music!
I teach in an area with a lot of economic hardship which limits my students’ access to instruments, private lessons, and technology. However, it in no way limits their love of music and potential to compose and perform. They truly enjoy playing all the instruments in the classroom, learning to sing and play their favorite songs and write their own music.
My Project
One of my students was born with physical deformities that make access to traditional instruments extremely challenging. She has one partially functioning finger per hand. She plays melodies on the piano, and she has tried the bass and the drums with modifications and assistance from myself and other students, but her frustration at her lack of independence (especially as she gets older) is evident. She is currently in 6th grade and we are coming up on our guitar unit, an instrument all students have been eagerly waiting to learn for many years, and I honestly had no idea how to make this instrument accessible to her until I finally had a moment of inspiration.
An iPad with the Garageband app would give her access to the same musical instruments as the rest of the class!
The Garageband app has screens for playing guitar, bass, and drums that you can play with the swipe of a finger! With a tripod to hold the tablet and a Bluetooth speaker to amplify the sound she will be able to participate in all aspects of the lesson with the same level of independence as her peers!
Help me give this student access to the same instruments and level of independence her peers enjoy by getting her a tablet, stand, and speaker so she can participate in all parts of music class.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
