This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work as the music and choir teacher at a Title I school where most students are low income. It has been open almost three years, and I have been there since the beginning. The program focuses on DLI; students learn Spanish half of their school day and English the other half.

Although my school is only starting its fourth year, our music program is steadily growing and thriving.

My students love music class, are excited to learn, and most importantly are learning while having fun. I am a firm believer in hands-on learning and believe this is the best way for information to stick. When every student has an instrument, this helps the information to stick.

My Project

I am starting a modern bass class for my students where students will learn to play the drums, guitar, bass guitar, and piano by the end of the year. Students love this class because they are learning to play music they already know and love, but also learning to play not one, but four instruments at a intermediate level (chords, tabs, basic rhythms, riffs, etc.) I also love this class because I get to introduce students to music I love like The Goo Goo Dolls, Jimi Hendrixx, AC/DC, and U2.

As of right now, I only have one bass guitar but a class size of around 30 students; this makes it difficult to teach each student in the class to play bass guitar.

I do use my guitars for learning bass also by using the four lowest strings, but I still do not have enough. Having one more bass would be so helpful in teaching my students.
