This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high-poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences through the process of learning to play a musical instrument.

They love positive attention and once they have learned the basics of how to play an instrument, they look forward to showing off their musical skills and performing.

Many are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free or reduced-price lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical."

From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.

My Project

There are so many valuable skills that are learned through the intense study of learning to play a band instrument. Not only is music an art form worthy of study in its own right, but studies have proven that musical training helps develop language, reasoning, social-emotional skills and helps students stay engaged in school.

With this concert bass drum stand, our students will be able to learn how to play and perform in a concert band.

Right now, our concert bass drum can be easily damaged. The large size and weight make it difficult for our young music students to take out and put away the bass drum, which can lead to the drum becoming broken or damaged unintentionally. This bass drum stand allows for the students to roll the instrument back to a location where it can be safely put away which makes it easier to handle and decreases the chances of the instrument becoming damaged. A concert bass drum is a necessary and essential part of the concert band and this bass drum stand will help our music program become even more enduring and sustainable for this and the next generation of music students to come!
