Help me give my students a collection of Spanish, Arabic, and engaging middle grades texts to help build the habit of daily reading in their first year of middle school.
Middle school can be tough. Everyone remembers the social awkwardness and growing academic expectations during these few years.
My students, in addition to the growing pains of middle school, are also navigating a new language and culture.
My students are English Language Learners from around the world, with seven different languages and over twelve different countries represented in our classes. They face their challenges with enthusiasm, curiosity and hard-work. They are eager to learn and share their stories. As a class, we focus on projects that promote critical thinking and student voice, doing projects from classroom recipes, visiting local farms and creating our own bilingual poetry.
My Project
I am requesting a set of Spanish, Arabic and middle grades books for middle school students who are learning English. The books are readable but not childish, and the graphic novels are especially appealing to older students. In addition, the Spanish and Arabic titles help our students to strengthen their home language and engage in reading.
A collection of books like these will help every student in class to find something engaging to read.
Helping students become confident readers is so important to our classroom, and your support will help us give these teens a successful start to the new school year.
