Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every time I walk into a new science lab, it is like I need to learn a new language. My students are trying to learn the language of science at the same time they learn English. I'd like to break down both of these barriers by getting students to present and participate in science fairs.
Our school is located in Queens, the most diverse county in the United States.
There are over a dozen languages spoken in my school alone. English is the common language all of my students have come to learn. They are all recent immigrants who have come to the U.S. for the chance at a great education. Despite great ambitions though, we don't always have the resources to meet them.
Science, what I teach, is a very democratizing discipline because it seeks universal truths that can be observed by anyone. The real challenge comes when students then need to communicate the experiments and results they are seeing. The best practice at becoming a good scientist is no different than learning a language - talking to others about what you've got going on.
My Project
Science fairs are a great way to do this. Among our network of International High Schools, we have organized an annual science fair for students from all corners of the city. They first see a presentation of the latest research by a leading scientist, then they enjoy lunch with new friends, and then present their posters to one another.
The basic material for these fairs is the trusty tri-fold presentation board. It serves as a canvas for students to paint as alluring a picture as they can to get others excited about their research. It is a backdrop that both serves as a security blanket for them while presenting, as well as a talking piece to elicit honest, useful feedback they can take back to improve their work.
I am asking for a large number of these boards so that anyone who wants to present at the science fair can have the same tool available to them as does anyone who practices science for a living.
It's one of the formative experiences of any scientist to present at science fairs.
There is something nerve-wracking about exposing one's work for critique, but also liberating in knowing that it is something other scientists are all coming together to do. You will be donating not just boards, but a platform for students to become better English-speakers, listeners, and scientists. Please help make this event even more special by giving them all boards for showing off their best stuff.
