Let's be honest -- math can be hard, so creating a successful support system in the math classroom is absolutely essential. One of the teaching strategies I've used over my 16-year career is creating interactive lesson videos for those times when new material is being presented. Although a necessary part of learning math, these more lecture-y moments are when students tend to feel like school is slowly killing them with boredom and then understandably check out. Having students watch me teach material via an interactive lesson video allows them to pause, rewatch (and rewatch and rewatch) or even speed me up so that each student is able to customize their experience a little more than they could with me teaching the whole class live. In the past, my students have provided their own headphones/earbuds in order to facilitate this, but this is not a financial possibility for many of my students at FDHS. That's where I hope you'll join me in providing my students with headphones that will enable them to engage with lesson videos without distraction.
The students are absolutely wonderful kids who care about learning, and they're also dealing with the complex effects of significant poverty.
The second part of my materials list contains binder dividers. I've already begun collecting binders for students around Atlanta, and now I'm hoping you'll help me fill these binders with high-quality items that students can use in my class and take with them when they leave. My goal is to help my students develop an organizational system for their materials and create effective learning habits they can take with them throughout high school and beyond.
Thank you in advance for your consideration. I look forward to partnering with you to provide all students an educational experience that is genuinely excellent.
