Algae Growth and Maintenance

Help me give my students an opportunity to see real living algae. I would like them to have the opportunity to grow, feed, observe, and harvest their own living Algae.

My Project

Imagine a classroom where students are not just passive learners but active scientists, cultivating living organisms, conducting experiments, and exploring the intricate workings of nature firsthand. With your support, this vision can become a reality through the implementation of an algae culture program in our school.

Diatoms and Algae offer a unique and engaging opportunity for students to delve into various scientific disciplines, from biology to environmental science using dinoflagellates as a resource.

By growing algae, and feeding and maintaining cultures, students will not only gain valuable hands-on experience but also develop a deeper understanding of ecological concepts and biological processes.

One of the key aspects of our proposed project is the use of algae cultures for density, population growth, and turbidity studies. Students will observe how algae populations fluctuate over time, investigate factors influencing population density, and explore the implications of turbidity on aquatic ecosystems. These activities will foster critical thinking skills and provide a tangible connection to real-world environmental issues. Using the heated mat to maintain a consistent temperature, the rubber stoppers prevent introduction of foreign bodies into the flasks. We will also need a medium to provide nutrients thus the fertilizers.

Furthermore, algae cultures will serve as invaluable resources for experiments on cellular respiration and photosynthesis. Students will investigate how algae utilize sunlight and carbon dioxide to produce oxygen through photosynthesis, and how they consume oxygen and release carbon dioxide through cellular respiration. These experiments will not only reinforce fundamental biological concepts but also promote inquiry-based learning and scientific inquiry.
