My students need the materials to run our annual Alex's Lemonade Stand event. They advertise, sell lemonade/bracelets and run games to help fund cancer research.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever tried hosting an event for a great cause but had to cut out terrific ideas due to lack of funds? Last year, my 6th graders wanted an "EPIC" event to raise as much money as possible for childhood cancer research but we were unable to execute many of our ideas.
Got Heart?
Walk through the halls of my school for a few minutes and you can't but smile. The excitement, enthusiasm and energy from the staff and children will make you excited to learn and achieve.
The school is a public school in a struggling economic area. The families where many of my students come from have been uprooted from their home country and are looking for a better life. Language barriers and working multiple jobs hinder many of the parents from being active in the school community but the parents care and try their hardest to give the best to their children.
A few years ago, we hosted our first lemonade stand in honor of "Alex" and the children and adults have been personally vested in the cause since. Cancer is a terrible disease and when a young child's life is taken too soon, it touches everyone. Even with tight finances, my school was able to raise over $3,000 in the last three years to help fund childhood cancer research!
My Project
I have requested plastic cups, a cloth sign that we can make and use year after year, yarn & alphabet beads for the bracelets and bottled water.
There are also many life and academic skills embedded throughout the planning of this event. For example, organization, advertising and budgeting are important skills the students develop in the weeks prior to the event. Academically, they collect data (donations per class/grade), chart the data and come to conclusions based on their findings. We now know that over 80% of our money is raised at the actual event- not by putting cans in each classroom. This information helps us make every year better than the previous. We added games at last year's event which was a huge success with the younger grades and helped raise even more money!
This event also helps instill a sense of community and pride as the whole school works together for a great cause!
By donating the materials I've requested, you are making it possible for my students to raise even more money for this cause.
With the cost of the supplies being so high, we are taking away from the money we can be sending to support Alex's Lemonade Stand. Every year, the kids learn compassion, teamwork and the importance of a strong community by running this school wide event. Their sense of pride in themselves and in their community grows as they work together to help.
