My Project

Help my 7th and 8th grade students explore racial justice and identity by reading The Crossover by Kwame Alexander and creating digital poetry anthologies and social justice posters using Canva.

The Crossover is a novel-in-verse that centers on two Black brothers navigating adolescence, basketball, family, and identity. Through this text, students will engage in literary analysis, explore racial justice themes, and connect their learning to real-life issues in their communities.

After our reading and discussion, students will use Canva for Education to design and publish:

Original poems inspired by Kwame Alexander’s style and themes

Racial justice advocacy posters based on characters’ experiences

Digital anthologies or e-zines highlighting their personal connections to the text and social justice issues

This project supports CMSD’s commitment to culturally responsive pedagogy, student voice, and digital literacy, while meeting Ohio’s ELA standards for reading, writing, and multimedia presentation. Students will reflect, write, revise, and publish their work for authentic audiences—building confidence and 21st-century communication skills.
